Apollo Bay
on the Great Ocean Road

The earliest known white settlement in the area was by the Henty Brothers who established a whaling station at Point Bunbury.

The earliest names for the settlement were “Middleton” and later “Krambruk” - with the town eventually taking on the name of the given to the bay by Captain Loutit who used it for shelter for his coastal trading vessel “Apollo”.

Apollo Bay is a popular tourist spot all year round.  Its wide sandy beaches, safe harbour and local attractions make it ideal for holidays.

Apollo Bay known as “paradise by the sea” - is mid-way along Victoria’s Great Ocean Road.

Apollo Bay is the home of the wonderful annual Music Festival, base of the Great Ocean Road Marathon, key centre of the Great Ocean Walk - one of Australia’s most scenic walks - and home to an active arts community.

As well as some of the best beaches in Victoria Apollo Bay has a wonderful 9 hole golf course overlooking the fishing harbour and ocean.

The Apollo Bay Airport provides the ideal base for sight seeing flights over the Great Ocean Road and the 12 Apostles as well as King Island.

There’s a weekly community market on the village green for locally produced goods and a monthly Farmers Market.

The old cable station - site of the first trans-Bass Strait communications cable with Tasmania - is the home of the Apollo Bay Museum, providing an insight into the early settlement of the area and those early communications technologies.

In March there’s the Apollo Bay Show - a traditional country show and a must for locals and visitors alike.

The Otway Forum is a community organisation which acts as a communication and information channel between the ratepayers and residents and the Colac Otway Council.  It meets monthly.

There’s a great range of accommodation to suit every need.

Apollo Bay has many community organisations - making it not just a great place to holiday, but also a great place to live.  This website provides a window to some of those organisations.
